| In Phase I of this project Slack & Associates completed the 9-hole expansion of this historic 1930s Perry Maxwell original. It opened to rave reviews and has become the cornerstone of a multi-purpose citywide park restoration, also master planned by Jerry Slack, and has spurred further park development items such as a new college stadium, access roads, pavilions, areas of recreation, and an air museum. An amphitheater and hotel to overlook the course will follow, as well as a new clubhouse/restaurant and major water park. The currently ongoing Phase II will restore Maxwells original nine. Having been tinkered with over the years by various parties, Slack & Associates will restore the front side to the original to the style and character it once had. | Included
in this effort is putting back a strategically critical lake on the par five fourth
hole that was removed in the 1980s, as well as reestablishing the green at number
7 back across a small ravine to where evidence shows it was originally located.
Also included has been the addition of Maxwell style bunkering in the proper strategic
locations on eight of the nine greens, as well as updating the irrigation system
and rebuilding the greens and tees to U.S.G.A. specifications. These improvements,
when combined with the previously constructed nine hole expansion in Phase I,
will improve the course rating and conditioning to a level of state amateur/regional
open qualifying status. The womens state amateur is currently considering
Hillcrest as a venue as soon as clubhouse facilities are completed. |
